West Coast Tasmania Family Owned
There is something pretty raw and grounding about growing up in the remote and sometimes unforgiving west coast Tasmania environment. When settler and pioneer Charles Grining and his family moved to the new settlement of Strahan in 1887 to restart their life after a horrific bushfire in Heemskirk, they went about building a family foundation that has been moulded into something we are sure they would be very proud of today.
Once settled in Strahan, Charles Grining and two of his nine children were drawn to the water, Charles Jnr a sailor and Harry in his fathers footsteps became a distinguished boat builder who built many of the famous Gordon River Punts that were used by Piners. These boats are still seen scattered around the shores of Strahan today. The love of water, a passion for boats and boat building, the necessity to be creative and innovative to thrive in isolated communities seems to be innate in 5th and 6th generation Grinings.
We love greeting visitors to our region, we realise it is quite a journey travelling to see us on the west coast so naturally all our guests are treated as VIP’s, there is no doubt about that. We are proud of our history, our ancestor’s contribution to the region, and we feel so privileged to be able to share this very special part of the world with you. Your support of our family business means that we can continue to protect, support, nurture and love this special part of the world for many more years to come.
The ‘J Lee M’
Sandra and Don Grining worked tirelessly on this boat and pretty much brought their children up in the business, in fact many of the local children grew up working on this boat. The family’s passion for The Gordon River and Tasmanian tourism was grown from here.
